About the Film
Few architects ever get the opportunity to build in one of the most extreme environments on Earth—Antarctica. Building on the Edge follows an ambitious group of design students who are given that rare chance.
Frustrated by the limitations of standard government construction, scientists at NOAA take an unconventional step: they invite the University of Colorado’s Design/Build program to rethink what architecture in Antarctica could be. What follows is a high-stakes experiment in creativity, resilience, and ingenuity.
The students must design structures that can survive one of the harshest climates on the planet—then figure out how to actually get them there. Built in Colorado, disassembled, shipped to Chile, transported across the notorious Drake Passage, and finally ferried by raft to the Antarctic coast, the project becomes as much about logistics and endurance as it is about design.
At once a story of idealism and reality, Building on the Edge captures what happens when bold architectural thinking is pushed to its absolute limits.
