Description Q&A after the screening of Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect

After graduating from University College Dublin and working in Dublin, London, and Chicago, Kevin Roche joined the firm of Eero Saarinen and Associates, the predecessor of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates LLC, in 1950.  In 1954 he became the principal design associate to Eero Saarinen working on all the major projects.  Following Mr. Saarinen’s death in 1961, Roche together with John Dinkeloo inherited the Saarinen practice.  Roche, as designer, was responsible for completing ten of Saarinen’s major works, which included the TWA Terminal at JFK, the Dulles International Airport, the CBS Headquarters, Bell Labs Headquarters, and the St. Louis Arch.  In 1966 the firm of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates was formed.

Mr. Roche has master planned and designed diverse facilities noted for their advances in design concepts.  His completed work includes, among other things, eight museums, 38 institutional and corporate headquarters, seven research laboratories, performing arts centers, theaters, campus buildings for six universities, and the Central Park Zoo.  In the last 44 years he has developed the master plan for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has designed all of the new wings in addition to installing several of the collections.  He has projects currently in design or under construction in many parts of the United States, Europe, and Asia.

He is a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects and a registered architect in 14 states.  Mr. Roche is an Academician and Past President of the American Academy of Arts & Letters.  He was the second American architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1982 and has been the recipient of numerous other awards including the Gold Medal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Gold Medal Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1993.
